Affective Computing

Affective Computing is an emerging field aimed to develop intelligent systems that are able to detect, interpret and process human emotions. It is always desired that a machine can understand the emotional state of a user and react accordingly like a human being. Affective Computing is an interdisciplinary field incorporates many other fields like Computer Science, Psychology and Cognitive Science etc. Emotion may be expressed through many ways such as by gesture, posture, facial expression or through physiological signals such as brain activity, heart rate, muscle activity, blood pressure, skin temperature, etc. Generally, human being recognize emotion through facial expression, however all emotions especially complex emotions like pride, lovely, mellow, melancholy etc. cannot be recognized through facial expressions, therefore, physiological signals may be used to describe complex affects.

Image Processing

Digital image processing deals with manipulation of digital images through a digital computer. It is a subfield of signals and systems but focus particularly on images. DIP focuses on developing a computer system that is able to perform processing on an image. The input of that system is a digital image and the system process that image using efficient algorithms, and gives an image as an output. Following topics covered: • Image Processing Techniques and Application • Image and multi-Dimensional Signal Processing • Video Processing: motion estimation, activities and surveillance • Biomedical Signal Processing • Voice, Audio and Multimedia Processing • Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition

Visual Surveillance

In the modern world, all livings appeal towards technology so that they are encircled by the electronic devices such as smartphones, digital cameras and sensors. It is very comfortable to place a systematic observation on places, persons, groups and other changing information in the environment through these devices especially closed circuit television (CCTV). Moreover, these devices also provides a means of collective reasoning as well communication that helps in assistance of the behaviour and the activities of daily routines of the human beings. As increasing of crime rate, handling the criticalities of visual surveillance is a trivial task nowadays because it is much convenient for convicts to hide from the sentinels. Therefore, there is a need of an automated system that is capable of monitoring as well as identifying abnormal activities in video footage to reduce burden of operator and control crime rate up to some extent. It is beneficial to specify that a powerful video reconnaissance framework should be human driven and mulls over the data about human objects communicating in an all encompassing way.

Speech Processing

Speech processing is the study of speech signals and the processing methods of these signals. The signals are usually processed in a digital representation, so speech processing can be regarded as a special case of digital signal processing, applied to speech signal. Aspects of speech processing includes the acquisition, manipulation, storage, transfer and output of speech signals. Following research topics covered:

  • speaker identification system

  • acoustic modelling using statistical models

  • basic research in machine learning

  • large vocabulary recognition

  • multimedia document retrieval

  • speaker and environment adaptation

  • spoken dialogue systems

  • transcription of found speech
